60 minHere’s a party trick that always works: bake a creamy ham and cheese dip inside its own bread bowl. You hollow out a round loaf, fill it with the ham-and-cheese mixture, cap it with the bread lid, wrap the whole thing in foil, and let the oven do the rest. The bread you scoop out becomes the dippers, so nothing goes to waste.
The hour in the foil is what makes it. Wrapped up tight, the dip steams and melts into a hot, gooey pool while the bread bowl warms through and its inner walls turn soft and savory from soaking up the filling. By the time you unwrap it, the cheese is molten and the ham has perfumed the whole loaf.
Set it out warm with the reserved bread chunks, crackers, and vegetables alongside. As the dip runs low, the best part is tearing into the soaked bread bowl itself.
Kitchen Tips
- Pick a sturdy, round loaf like sourdough; soft sandwich bread collapses under the warm dip.
- Don’t hollow the walls too thin, or the bowl turns soggy and splits before serving.
- Keep it wrapped in foil for the full bake so the dip heats through without the bread burning.
- Serve it hot; cheese dips firm up fast as they cool, so bring it straight from the oven.
Variations
- Swap the ham for cooked bacon, or fold in chopped spinach or artichoke.
- Add a handful of shredded cheddar, swiss, or pepper jack to the mix.
- Stir in diced green onion or a spoonful of mustard for extra bite.
Ingredients
8" bread bowl
3 c grated cheddar
2 c sour cream
1/2 c finely chopped onion
1 c chopped Carl Buddig ham (don't use expensive ham! Must be the cheap kind!)
8 oz cream cheese
1 tsp worchestershire sauce
Directions
Slice top off bread bowl and hollow out. (Reserve bread for dipping.)
Combine other ingredients. Spoon into breadbowl and replace top. Wrap in foil. Bake on cookie sheet for about an hour.
