2 hrsThink of these as the snack bar that actually tastes like a treat. Melted semi-sweet chocolate and molasses coat crunchy bran flakes, chewy apricots, and tender prunes in a sticky, satisfying bite.
No oven needed. Just melt, mix, press into a pan, and chill until firm. Twenty-four bars from six simple ingredients.
The dried fruit brings natural sweetness and a pleasantly chewy contrast to the snap of bran flakes, while the molasses adds a deep, almost caramel undertone to the chocolate.
Pro Tips
- Chop the apricots and prunes into small, uniform pieces so every bar gets an even mix of fruit
- Melt the chocolate over barely simmering water, not boiling. Too much heat will seize the chocolate and turn it grainy
- Press the mixture firmly and evenly into the pan with the back of a damp spoon for clean-cut bars
- Let the bars come to room temperature for 5 minutes before cutting. Straight from the fridge, the chocolate can shatter instead of slicing cleanly
Ingredients
Directions
Grease a shallow 11” x 7” baking pan with butter; line bottom with parchment or waxed paper.
Melt chocolate, butter and molasses together in a bowl placed over a pan of gently simmering water.
Remove from heat.
Add apricots, prunes and cereal to chocolate mixture; mix thoroughly.
Spread in prepared pan, smoothing top with back of spoon.
Refrigerate 1 to 2 hours or until firmly set.
Loosen mixture from pan by running the tip of a knife around the inside edges of pan.
Turn out onto a board and remove paper; turn mixture over.
Cut in 24 pieces. Arrange bars neatly on a serving dish or store in an airtight container in a cool place for 2 to 3 days.
