This is the dirt-and-tombstone Halloween dessert that shows up at every elementary school party and fall potluck. Chocolate pudding lightened with whipped topping makes up the base, crushed Oreos create a layer of “dirt” both inside and on top, and decorated Milano or Pepperidge Farm sandwich cookies stand up as tombstones with candy props for the full cemetery scene.

Part of the fun is the assembly. This is a dessert that gets the kids involved without requiring any actual baking. Total hands-on time is about 15 minutes, and everything comes from the grocery store.

Kitchen Tips

  • Use cold milk straight from the fridge for the pudding mix. Instant pudding will not set properly with warm milk, and a warm or separated base will sag under the weight of the toppings.
  • Crush the Oreos by pulsing in a food processor or sealing in a bag and rolling with a rolling pin. You want fine crumbs for the “dirt” look, with only a few bigger chunks for texture.
  • Write on the tombstones with piping gel or black decorating icing. “RIP," “BOO," and made-up names of party guests are traditional and easy.
  • Add gummy worms poking out of the dirt and plastic skeleton hands for maximum spooky effect, especially with younger kids.

Variations

  • Use vanilla pudding tinted green for a swamp-graveyard twist.
  • Swap the chocolate pudding for butterscotch with crushed Nilla wafers for a sandy beach-meets-graveyard look.
  • Serve individual portions in clear plastic cups with one tombstone each for easy party distribution rather than a single shared pan.
