15 minThis is the kind of weeknight dinner that barely counts as cooking but looks like you tried. Pan-fried ham steaks get a sticky, spiced glaze made from honey, dry mustard, ground ginger, and a hint of clove.
The whole thing comes together in one skillet. Brown the ham steaks first to get some color and caramelization going, then build the glaze right in the same pan using those flavorful drippings. Simmering the honey mixture with the pan drippings for just a minute or two concentrates the sweetness and lets those warm spices bloom. Brush it over the ham and you’ve got a glossy, aromatic main dish.
The dry mustard is doing more than you’d think. It cuts through the sweetness of the honey and adds a subtle, sharp bite that keeps the glaze from tasting one-note.
Kitchen Tips
- Get a good sear on the ham steaks before removing them. That browning creates fond (the sticky bits on the pan) that flavors the glaze.
- Don’t skip the simmer. Raw honey and water won’t cling to the meat. A minute or two of bubbling thickens the glaze so it coats properly.
- Use pre-cooked ham steaks (most sold in stores already are). This recipe heats them through, it doesn’t cook raw pork.
Variations
- Maple version: Swap the honey for maple syrup and add a splash of apple cider vinegar for a tangy-sweet New England spin.
- Brown sugar glaze: Replace honey with brown sugar and add a tablespoon of Dijon mustard for a sharper, more caramelized crust.
- Pineapple ham steaks: Top each steak with a pineapple ring during the last minute of cooking for a retro diner touch.
