15 minFour ingredients and a microwave. That’s all it takes for a batch of 24 crunchy chocolate haystacks that disappear as fast as you can make them.
Popcorn, peanuts, and chow mein noodles get tossed together in a big bowl. The chow mein noodles are the secret weapon here. They add a salty, crispy crunch that’s different from the popcorn’s airy crunch, giving every haystack a mix of textures.
Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave on medium-high for about 3 minutes, stirring halfway through. Pour the melted chocolate over the popcorn mixture and toss until everything is coated. Then drop spoonfuls onto wax paper and let them cool until firm.
The chocolate acts as the glue, binding all the crunchy bits into messy little mounds that look like tiny haystacks. They’re fun, they’re addictive, and kids love helping make them.
Kitchen Tips
- Stir the chocolate every 60 seconds while microwaving. Chocolate can scorch even in a microwave, and it holds its shape until you stir it, so it looks unmelted when it’s actually burning underneath
- Work fast once the chocolate is melted. It starts setting as it cools and won’t coat evenly once it thickens
- Use plain, unsalted popcorn if you want the chocolate sweetness to dominate. Salted popcorn creates a sweet-salty combination
- Store in a tightly covered container at room temperature. They’ll keep for about a week
Variations
- Use butterscotch chips or white chocolate chips instead of regular chocolate
- Swap peanuts for cashews or almonds for a different nut flavor
- Add a handful of mini marshmallows to the mix before coating for extra chewiness
