This is the lasagna that built Sunday dinners across America.
A slow-simmered meat sauce made with ground beef, onion, garlic, canned tomatoes, and oregano gets layered with tender noodles and a three-cheese lineup of cottage cheese, mozzarella, and sharp cheddar.
No fancy béchamel, no imported ingredients. Just honest, from-scratch comfort food stacked high in a baking dish.
The top layer of mozzarella melts into a bubbly, stretchy, golden crust that’s almost impossible to resist picking at before dinner is served.
Kitchen Tips
- Simmer the sauce long enough: Forty minutes lets the flavors meld and the sauce thicken so it doesn’t make the lasagna watery.
- Cottage cheese trick: For a smoother filling, give it a quick pulse in the food processor. Or leave it chunky if you like the texture.
- Let it rest after baking: Give the lasagna 10-15 minutes out of the oven before cutting. It firms up and the layers hold together for cleaner slices.
- Sharp cheddar adds punch: The cheddar might not be traditional Italian, but it brings a tangy bite that sets this American-style lasagna apart.
