70 minThese chocolate bars build layers of flavor starting with a buttery shortbread crust, then a blanket of semi-sweet chocolate chips, and finally a gooey nut topping bound with sweetened condensed milk and maple flavoring. Each bite gives you crunch, chew, and that warm maple-chocolate combination.
The crust gets cut together like pie dough, not creamed. Cold margarine or butter worked into the flour and sugar creates a crumbly, shortbread-like base that holds up under all that topping without getting soggy. Press it in firmly and evenly so it bakes flat.
Maple flavoring does the work here instead of real maple syrup, which would add too much liquid and throw off the set of the condensed milk filling. A little goes a long way, and it gives you that concentrated maple punch without diluting anything.
Chef Tips
- Let the crust cool for 5 minutes after its first bake before adding the chocolate chips. Warm crust melts them just enough to create an even layer.
- Use a mix of walnuts and pecans for the best texture and flavor contrast.
- Don’t overbake the second round. Pull them when the top is just golden, not dark brown. The bars continue firming up as they cool.
- Cut bars while still slightly warm for cleaner edges. Fully cooled bars tend to crack and crumble.
Variations
- Replace maple flavoring with real vanilla extract and add ½ cup shredded coconut for a magic bar spin.
- Use white chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet for a sweeter, creamier profile.
- Stir ½ cup dried cranberries into the nut mixture for a tart contrast against the sweet filling.
