60 minThis is the chocolate trifle that shows up at every potluck and leaves with an empty dish.
Fudge brownies (baked from a mix, no shame) get crumbled and soaked in a Kahlua-chocolate syrup mixture, then layered with instant chocolate mousse, clouds of whipped topping, and chunks of crushed Heath bars scattered between every level.
It’s unapologetically over the top. Four layers of chocolate in different textures, from the dense, boozy brownie base to the airy mousse to the buttery toffee crunch.
The best part: everything comes from a box, a bottle, or a bag. Sixteen servings of pure indulgence with zero from-scratch stress.
Pro Tips
- Let the brownies cool completely before crumbling. Warm brownies turn into a sticky paste instead of distinct pieces.
- Assemble at least 2 hours before serving and refrigerate. The layers need time to meld and the brownies soak up the syrup mixture.
- Use a clear glass trifle bowl or deep dish so everyone can see those layered stripes. Presentation is half the fun.
Variations
- Non-alcoholic: Replace the Kahlua with strong brewed coffee or chocolate milk for the same depth without the booze.
- Peanut butter layer: Add a drizzle of warmed peanut butter between the brownie and mousse layers for a chocolate-PB combination.
- Oreo crunch: Swap the Heath bars for crushed Oreos if toffee isn’t your thing.
Ingredients
Directions
Bake the fudge brownie mix according to directions.
While it is baking, mix together the chocolate syrup and the coffee liqueur. Pour about half of that mixture into the serving dish.
When the brownie is done and cooled, break it up and put into the dish (on top of the syrup), mashing it is OK.
Pour half of what is left of the syrup mixture on top of the brownie mix and refrigerate.
Make the Mousse according to package directions.
Spread the mousse on top of the cake.
Spread the whipped topping on top of the mousse.
Drizzle the remaining chocolate syrup on top of the whipped topping or on top of each serving as it is served.
Break up the chocolate bars and sprinkle them betweem layers.
