Regular rice crispy treats get a full Halloween makeover here. Orange-tinted marshmallow binds crisp rice cereal with handfuls of candy corn, miniature chocolate chips, and candy pumpkins pressed right into the top. They look festive, they’re fun to make with kids, and they disappear fast.

The process is simple: melt butter and marshmallows together until smooth, tint with orange food coloring, then fold in the cereal and candy. Work quickly once you combine everything. The marshmallow sets up fast, and if you hesitate, you’ll end up with a sticky mess that’s hard to spread.

Butter your hands before pressing the mixture into the pan. Seriously, don’t skip this step. Bare hands plus hot marshmallow is a recipe for frustration, not treats. Press firmly and evenly so the bars hold together when cut.

Get the candy pumpkins on while the surface is still warm and tacky. Once it cools, they won’t stick. Space them about 1 ½ to 2 inches apart so every square gets one.

Chef Tips

  • Use a jelly roll pan (rimmed baking sheet) for thinner, crispier bars. A 9×13 pan works too for thicker squares.
  • Refrigerate before cutting for cleaner edges. A wet knife helps too.
  • Wrap individually in cellophane bags tied with orange ribbon for school party treats.
  • The candy corn gets slightly chewy as it absorbs moisture from the marshmallow. That’s a feature, not a bug.

Variations

  • Spooky sprinkles: Skip the food coloring and top with Halloween-themed sprinkles instead.
  • White chocolate drizzle: After cooling, drizzle melted white chocolate tinted orange over the top for extra flair.
