7 daysHalloween horrific witches brew is the showstopper centerpiece every Halloween party needs. The trick is the frozen severed hand bobbing in the punch bowl, made by freezing a sealed rubber glove full of blood-red raspberry and cranberry juice until it’s solid as a fist.
Gelatin in the freezing liquid is the move that makes the hand look terrifyingly realistic. Without it, the ice melts smooth and quickly into a clear blob. With it, the surface stays slightly opaque and the hand keeps its detailed knuckles, fingernails, and palm lines for hours of party time.
When ready to serve, snip the glove away to reveal the macabre hand, then prop it palm-up against the side of a clear punch bowl filled with bubbly ginger ale and sparkling apple cider. Toss in a few gummy snakes and the bowl looks like something out of a horror film. Kids freak out in the best way.
Kitchen Tips
- Use a brand-new latex or food-safe vinyl glove and wash it thoroughly inside and out before use. Don’t use powdered medical gloves, which can leave residue.
- Tie the glove off tightly with kitchen twine and double-check for leaks before placing in the freezer. A leaky glove makes a colorful mess.
- Freeze for at least 24 hours, ideally 2 to 3 days. A partly frozen hand will collapse the moment you peel the glove.
- Add the hand to the bowl just before guests arrive. It will melt slowly over a few hours, gradually tinting the punch a deepening blood red.
Variations
- Swap raspberry-cranberry for blood orange juice and grenadine for a different shade of red and a citrus profile.
- Add a splash of vodka or white rum for an adult version of the punch.
- Use Sprite or lemon-lime soda in place of ginger ale for a sweeter, less spicy fizz.
