This is a clever kid-friendly Halloween craft and drink rolled into one. Whole oranges get hollowed out, decorated with icing and candy to look like little jack-o-lanterns, and filled with a blended orange-yogurt smoothie made from the scooped-out pulp. Each guest gets a drinkable orange with a face and a straw.

The trick is slicing a thin piece off the bottom of each orange before hollowing. This creates a flat base so the finished jack-o-lantern sits upright on the table instead of rolling sideways when guests try to sip.

Using all the pulp in the blender means nothing goes to waste, and the smoothie already tastes of orange without needing added juice. Plain or vanilla yogurt both work; vanilla adds a touch more sweetness for picky kids.

For the decorating stage, lean into it. Black icing for scary faces, colored candies for eyes, a green gumdrop stem on top of the cap. This is meant to be fun, so don’t worry about precision; uneven, wonky faces are part of the charm.

Kitchen Tips

  • Use navel oranges; they’re easier to hollow and seedless, so no straining needed.
  • A grapefruit spoon or melon baller scoops pulp cleanly without tearing the rind.
  • Chill the oranges before blending so the smoothie comes out cold.
  • Assemble right before serving; the icing softens if the filled oranges sit too long.

Variations

  • Add a frozen banana or a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the blender for a creamier drink.
  • Swap yogurt for coconut cream for a dairy-free version.
  • Use small green apples or hollowed lemons as alternate “mini pumpkin” shapes.
