Craving that crumbly, slightly sweet cornbread but want to skip the butter overload?

This version sneaks in whole wheat flour and applesauce for moisture, while honey adds just enough natural sweetness to balance the corn’s earthy bite.

Bakes up golden with crispy edges and a soft, springy center that soaks up every drop of chili or stew.

Pro Tips

  • Mix gently: Stir just until combined; overmixing makes cornbread tough and dense
  • Check early: Oven temps vary, so start checking at 20 minutes to avoid dry edges
  • Serve warm: Cornbread tastes best straight from the oven with a pat of butter melting on top

Variations

  • Fold in ½ cup shredded cheddar and diced jalapeños for spicy cheese cornbread
  • Add ¼ cup frozen corn kernels for extra texture and sweetness
  • Drizzle with maple syrup instead of honey for a different flavor profile
