Transform ordinary cupcakes into spooky Halloween showpieces with a delicate chocolate spider web that looks straight from a professional bakery.
Pipe melted chocolate onto parchment paper following a traced pattern, then freeze until solid.
The fragile web lifts right off the paper and sits beautifully on top of frosted cupcakes.
A tiny chocolate spider completes the creepy-crawly scene.
Chef Tips
- Draw your pattern first: Trace an 11-inch circle and web design before piping
- Flip the paper over: Pipe on the unmarked side so you don’t transfer ink to the chocolate
- Use a pastry bag: A small tip gives you control for delicate web strands
- Freeze completely: At least 1 hour ensures the web is sturdy enough to handle
- Handle gently: The web is fragile; use a spatula to transfer it to cupcakes
Variations
- Make multiple smaller webs for individual cupcake decorations
- Use white chocolate for ghost-white webs
- Pipe bats or pumpkins instead of spiders for variety
Ingredients
Directions
Make cupcakes and set aside.
CHOCOLATE WEB AND SPIDER- On a sheet of parchment paper draw an 11 inch circle with a pen or pencil and draw a spider web on it, extending some of ends beyond circle.
Tear off a large corner of the paper and on it draw a spider.
Turn drawings over onto a large baking sheet.
In a metal bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water melt chocolate chips, stirring until smooth.
Transfer chocolate to a pastry bag fitted with a #3 plain tip (slightly smaller than ⅛ inch).
(Alternatively, form a makeshift pastry bag: Transfer chocolate to a small sealable plastic bag and seal bag, pressing out excess air.
Squeeze chocolate to one corner of bag and snip off about 1 inch from corner making a small hole.
) Pipe chocolate on web, beginning with spokes, and on spider.
Freeze web and spider on baking sheet until very firm, at least 1 hour and up to 1 day.
