The twist that sets this version apart is the chopped hot dogs stirred in at the end. It sounds odd until you taste it. The frankfurters add a smoky, salty bite that breaks up the texture and turns every other forkful into a little surprise. It’s also a smart way to stretch the beef when feeding a crowd.

Microwaving raw ground beef sounds wrong, but it browns just fine if you break it up frequently with a fork. Directions

In a deep, 3-quart, heat-resistant, non-metallic casserole heat oil in microwave oven 2 minutes.

Crumble meat into hot oil and heat, uncovered, 7½ minutes, breaking up meat particles frequently.

Cook until all red has gone out of meat.

Drain off excess fat.

Stir in salt, pepper, chili powder and tomato sauce.

Heat, uncovered, in Microwave Oven 4 minutes or until heated through.

Add frankfurter rounds and heat, uncovered, an additional 4 minutes or until frankfurters are hot.

Spoon Sloppy Joe mixture over hamburger buns.
