35 minIf you’ve ever been to a potluck in the South, you’ve probably met a version of this pie. And you definitely went back for seconds.
A crunchy, nutty crust gets baked until golden, then layered with a fluffy cream cheese and whipped topping mixture, followed by a double-pudding layer mixing chocolate and vanilla.
The whole thing gets chilled until set, then crowned with more whipped topping, shaved chocolate, and nuts.
It feeds a crowd, takes almost no skill, and disappears faster than anything else on the dessert table.
Chef Tips
- Make sure the crust is completely cooled before adding the cream cheese layer, otherwise it will melt and mix into the crust
- Mix the pudding to pie-filling consistency (less milk than the box directions for regular pudding) so it sets firm enough to slice
- Chill at least 2 hours before serving so the layers hold their shape when you cut into it
Variations
- Coconut version: Use coconut pudding instead of chocolate and vanilla, then top with toasted coconut and chopped macadamia nuts
- Peanut butter twist: Blend ½ cup peanut butter into the cream cheese layer for a rich, nutty upgrade
