8 hrsSwiss steak is old-school comfort food that relies on long, slow cooking to turn inexpensive round steak into something fork-tender and satisfying.
Dredging the meat in seasoned flour before adding to the crockpot creates a coating that thickens the tomato sauce as everything cooks together.
Carrots and celery add sweetness and texture while Worcestershire sauce brings savory depth that makes the simple tomato base taste more complex.
A sprinkle of grated cheese right before serving adds richness and gives the dish a finished, restaurant-quality look.
Slow Cooker Tips
- Cut steak into 4 equal portions so they fit in the crockpot without overlapping
- Cook on low for 8-10 hours rather than high so the tough meat has time to break down properly
- Double the recipe for a 5-quart crockpot and cook the maximum time to ensure everything’s tender
