Hearty vegetarian TVP burgers: textured vegetable protein soaked in seasoned broth, mixed with sauteed onion and spices, and pan-fried into savory patties. A high-protein, budget-friendly meatless burger.

These vegetarian burgers are built on TVP, textured vegetable protein, a dried soy product that’s cheap, high in protein, and takes on a satisfyingly meaty, chewy texture once rehydrated.

The trick with TVP is that it’s bland and dry straight from the bag, so it needs flavorful liquid. Here it soaks in a hot broth spiked with bouillon, gravy, and seasonings, drinking up all that savory flavor as it plumps.

Sautéed onion, chili powder, garlic, oregano, and soy sauce deepen it further, and a little flour binds everything so the patties hold together in the pan, since TVP on its own won’t stick.

Fry them until nicely browned and crisp at the edges, then serve on a whole wheat roll or tucked in a pita with your favorite toppings. It’s a budget-friendly, meatless burger with real heft.

Kitchen Tips

  • Soak the TVP in well-seasoned hot broth; that’s how it absorbs flavor and plumps up.
  • Don’t skip the flour; it binds the patties so they don’t fall apart when fried.
  • Pack and flatten the patties firmly so they hold their shape.
  • Fry until crisp and browned on both sides for the best texture.

Variations

  • Use tamari and a gluten-free binder to make them gluten-free.
  • Add smoked paprika, cumin, or BBQ sauce for a different flavor.
  • Top with melted cheese, avocado, or caramelized onions.
