What are mushrooms?

Mushrooms are the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground on soil or on its food source. The standard for the name "mushroom" is the cultivated white button mushroom.

Edible mushrooms are used extensively in cooking, in many cuisines. Though mushrooms are commonly thought to have little nutritional value, many species are high in fiber and provide vitamins.
